Commercial properties could get their own state-run "insurer of last
resort." Gov. Jeb Bush on Wednesday told regulators to begin crafting
a state-run pool to provide the coverage -- possibly modeled after
Citizens Property Insurance or as another reinsurance supplier for
private insurers.

REAL ESTATE COMPETITION
During a hearing on real estate competition and the impact of the
Internet, a U.S. House panel yesterday appeared largely unconvinced
by charges of anti-competitive behavior against Internet-based discount
brokerages and skeptical of calls for federal intervention. NAR
President-elect Pat Vredevoogd Combs noted that more types of
business models are represented in real estate markets today than ever
before.

HURRICANE RECOVERY
HUD plans to give Florida $82.9M for Hurricane Wilma recovery
earmarked for affordable housing. Doled out through its Community
Development Block Grant Program, money will go to counties and
Indian tribes in South Florida.

NEW HOME SALES
New home sales dropped by 3 percent last month to a seasonally
adjusted annual sales pace of 1.131 million units -- a bit less than
economists predicted -- and the inventory of unsold homes climbed
to a record high with a 6.1 month supply.

WHAT ARE THEY THINKING ..?
According to the most recent annual Harris Poll measuring public
perceptions of 23 professions and occupations, real estate brokers
are seen as having the least prestigious profession, coming in dead
last in the rankings (6 percent). Seen as the most prestigious
occupations, according to the poll? Firefighters (63 percent), doctors
(58 percent), nurses (55 percent), scientists (54 percent) and teachers
(52 percent). Other professions at the opposite end of the spectrum
included stockbrokers and business executives (tied for second least
prestigious profession at 11 percent); and actors and union leaders
(also tied, at 12 percent). The Harris Poll was conducted by telephone
between July 5 and 11, 2006, by Harris Interactive among a nationwide
sample of 1,020 U.S. adults. Harris Interactive has been asking about
the prestige of different professions and occupations since 1977.
